According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety on the 6th, Dong-A Pharmaceutical recently discovered a change in appearance (discoloration) in some items on the market for Champ Syrup manufactured in 2022, and started voluntarily recalling the distribution volume.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical estimates that the sugar component in the product turned brown due to heat during the distribution process, but the exact cause has not yet been identified.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which obtained related information, is currently investigating the cause of the outbreak, including a fact-finding survey of the factory.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety explained that “no problems were found in the company’s manufacturing and quality control,” but “we plan to quickly finish the investigation and inform the results.”

Dong-A Pharmaceutical is guiding recall measures through its website.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical said, “We are currently processing collection, replacement, and refunds through pharmacies, etc., and for customers who have difficulty visiting pharmacies, we are also collecting the product online, checking it, and processing refunds at the same time. Dear consumers,” We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Champ Syrup is an antipyretic for children, the main ingredient of which is acetaminophen, which Dong-A Pharmaceutical released in the form of a pouch for the first time in Korea in 2012. According to the data of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the production of champ syrup in 2021 is regarding 2.4 billion won, and has been steadily maintaining more than 2 billion won for the last 5 years.

However, it is expected that the recall will inevitably damage the brand and product image. Dong-A Pharmaceutical’s children’s antipyretic and cold brand ‘Champ’ was first released in 1993 and celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.

Champ products include ‘Champ Ibufen’, ‘Champ Nose’, and ‘Champ Corp’, and in February, ‘Champ Cold Syrup’, which claims to be colorless and preservative-free, was newly launched.
