The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Ceará closed, in 2022, with an expansion of 0.96% in relation to the previous year, according to data released by Ipece (Institute of Research and Economic Strategy of Ceará).
For this year, the state’s GDP estimate is 1.33%. If the expectation is confirmed, it will be higher than the projection of the national index, of 0.85%, calculated by the BC (Central Bank) Focus report. In December of last year, the expectation for 2023 was a rate of 2.19% for the state GDP, while the estimated national rate reached 0.75%.
According to Ricardo Técio, from RT Imóveis, a partner of DezNoventa – a company that operates in the real estate market with the purchase and treatment of properties with the aim of resale -, the city of Juazeiro do Norte (CE) and the region of Cariri have an important contribution to the state’s economy on account of religious tourism.
“Juazeiro do Norte, as well as the Cariri region of Ceará, are the epicenter of religious tourism with two large annual pilgrimages: Candeias, in February and Padroeira in September, reaching 500,000 people each”, he says.
And it doesn’t stop there: the city is known for its pilgrimages on All Souls’ Day, in addition to the birth and death of Father Cícero. “In December and January, Juazeiro receives pilgrimages with a more ‘elite’ public, with greater purchasing power, who come with their own vehicle and stay in hotels in the region”, he adds.
According to projections by the Ministry of Tourism, the traditional Holy Week celebrations should gather more than 1.3 million faithful in 2023 and move religious tourism across the country. In Juazeiro do Norte alone, the expectation is that 150,000 faithful will take advantage of the date to visit the statue of Padre Cícero, which receives 2.5 million visitors a year.
For Técio, another important factor is that Juazeiro is located at an equivalent distance of 500 kilometers from most capitals in the Northeast, which facilitates the visit of various segments.
“We receive, daily, regarding 300 topiqueiros – alternative passenger transport drivers – coming from 150 to 180 cities in the state and neighboring states, within a 200-kilometer radius of merchants who come to do their shopping in Juazeiro to, thus, supply their markets”, he informs.
Furthermore, according to the real estate specialist at DezNoventa, Juazeiro do Norte has a floating population of around 50,000 “outside” merchants, who come to the city to supply their businesses.
“Business growth in the state of Ceará, especially in the region of Juazeiro do Norte, can be seen through tourism and the growing taste for second homes, as well as the facilities and model of bank financing”, says Técio. “In addition, the Cariri region has developed in the health, commerce and real estate sectors, with emphasis on subdivisions”, he adds.
