John Travolta’s famous white suit from the ’70s is up for auction

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — “Saturday Night Fever” fans will have the chance to own a piece of pop culture era history later this month, when American actor John Travolta’s white three-piece suit goes up for auction. public.

The monochromatic suit is expected to fetch $200,000 when it enters bidding, as part of the “Hollywood: Classic & Contemporary” sale organized by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in California, USA. April 22 and 23.

In the 1977 dance drama, Travolta plays Tony Manero, an Italian-American from Brooklyn who tries to escape the realities of his life by dominating the dance floor at the local disco. According to auction organizers, the polyester bodysuit Travolta wore in the film’s famous dance competition scene is one of only two used during the film’s production. The jacket features an exaggerated collar featuring fine stitching.

The sale listing describes the costume as “one of the most iconic costumes in cinema history,” and states that it has been certified authentic by Paramount Studios and Travolta himself.

The film’s costume designer, Patrizia von Brandenstein, said of the quintessential 70s set in a statement that “heroes, from Sir Lancelot to Tom Mix, have worn white in major competitions to express purity and a single-minded devotion to the task in hand.”

“So white was, for me, the only suit option. And I’m grateful our hero, John Travolta, as well as the producers, looked at it the same way.”
