The Virginia Office of the State Medical Examiner confirmed that Irvo Otieno, a 28-year-old black man, died of homicide following sheriff’s deputies and medical personnel from Central State Hospital in the city on March 6 of Petersburg immobilize him and violently pin him to the ground. Otieno suffered a violent death during a mental health crisis, prompting renewed calls for police to be held accountable for his actions. Otieno’s official cause of death is listed as “positional and mechanical asphyxia with restraints.” In March, a Virginia grand jury indicted ten people, seven sheriff’s deputies and three hospital workers, on second-degree murder charges in Otieno’s death.
