Lolita, the ‘killer whale’, soon to be free in Pacific waters after 50 years of captivity at the Miami Seaquarium

In the 1960s-1970s, many killer whales were hunted for various reasons, 13 of them are dead and 40 others were delivered to amusement parks. A “hunt” whose consequences still impact today this group of endangered marine mammals. Lolita was captured on August 8, 1970, in Penn Cove, off Seattle, Washington. She was then sold to the Miami Seaquarium where she was the star of the show”Lolita, killer whale“, literally, “Lolita, the killer whale“, from the nickname given to orcs becausee of their reputation as a superpredateurs capable of attacking seals, penguins, dolphins, but also sharks and blue whales such as documented in this 2021 video.

Animal rights activists have long fought for Lolita to be released. Her partner Hugo had died of a brain aneurysm in 1980 following repeatedly hitting his head once morest the walls of his enclosure.
