With about 12 daily flights, spraying work continues to control the pomfret in Paria mangroves

During the 50th edition of his program “Loyalty is love for Sucre”, Governor Gilberto Pinto announced that spraying in the mangroves is advancing, with the aim of lowering the density of Hylesia Metabus, whose effects cause problems of urticaria and respiratory allergies. in humans.

The butterfly, better known as the hairy pomfret, whose natural habitat is the pipes or mangroves of Paria, reaches the populated centers of the Libertador, Cajigal, Benítez and Mariño municipalities, forcing its inhabitants to confine themselves to their homes during hours of the nights, when they must turn off the lighting and any incandescence that attracts the insect.

Pinto recognized that the lepidopterism caused by Hylesia affects the health of the inhabitants of the affected municipalities, as well as difficulties in the commercial sector.

He reported that teams were activated with the ministries of Health, Science and Technology, the governor’s office, and mayor’s offices, to combat the insect and took the opportunity to recognize the work of neighborhood spokespersons in the area.

The governor explained that 10 to 12 daily flights are carried out, with the support of the security forces, stationed on the Río de Agua runway from where the planes leave and return.

He stressed that the biological agent was manufactured between Ivic, the Central University and the Simón Bolívar University, which allows the control of the hairy pomfret.

Pinto informed that with two specific planes for this task they are doing the fumigations, with the biological agent BTK, to control the four biological cycles that the butterfly completes per year. The controller combines a mushroom with a carbohydrate, in this case corn.

He said that they have covered areas such as Caño Morrocoy, where Quebrada de La Niña discharges. “In front is Antica Island, in the Guarapichito channel, and in the same way is Turuépano Island, which is in the mouth with La Palma”, areas where 28 flights have been carried out since March 29. For which he explained that 358 hectares have been covered, with verifiable effectiveness.
