At least one person died in a serious train accident in the Netherlands and around 30 people were injured. Construction equipment on the tracks

The accident happened around 3:25 a.m. on the route from Leiden to The Hague near Voorschoten. The cause was initially unclear. According to eyewitnesses, a freight train and a passenger train hit a construction crane. According to the fire brigade and the railway, the passenger train derailed. Some cars had overturned.

According to a spokesman for the safety region Hollands Midden, construction equipment on the route might have been the cause of the accident. “The emergency services were quickly on site,” said a spokesman for the Dutch train company NS, who speaks of a major accident. “Our first concern is the people on the train, the passengers and our colleagues.” Around ten passengers were picked up by local residents. It is a very busy route from Amsterdam to The Hague.
