Countdown to democracy in Guinea

The United States remains a strong partner for Guinea. Since the September 5, 2021 coup, we have continued and even strengthened our support for the Guinean people. In Ambassador Fitrell’s letter to President Mamadi Doumbouya, he highlighted the more than US$50 million we have provided in technical and material assistance to the people of Guinea in the areas of health, security, human rights people, democracy and governance, and economic growth. This investment in the people of Guinea builds on our strong relationship since Guinea’s independence — a relationship that is built on friendship, mutual respect and a commitment to a freer and more prosperous world.

Last month, we launched our “Countdown to Democracy” on social media. This countdown recognizes and celebrates the commitment of President Doumbouya and the transitional authorities to complete the transition on January 1, 2025. We continue to support Guineans and their efforts throughout the transition. In January, we launched a new five-year US$15 million program to support all aspects of a transparent, inclusive, legal, political and electoral process. This project will build the capacity of the electoral management body and local election officials, assist with constitutional and electoral reform, provide technical support from legal experts, and train journalists and citizens to recognize fake news and how to provide accurate and unbiased information. This is in addition to the thousands of Guineans who have benefited from Embassy-funded democracy, governance, and human rights programming in 2022. As always, this assistance comes with no strings attached. .

The “Countdown to Democracy” is a reminder of the commitment of the transitional authorities and our commitment to democracy in Guinea. January 1, 2025 will be a day to celebrate the return of the Guinean people to democracy and constitutional order. We are here as friends and partners to encourage and support this historic event. And on January 1, 2025, we will be there to encourage and support the new Guinean democracy that you will create and which will preside for generations. Together for Guinea!
