Civil Society Coalition to Attend Luhut Defamation Initial Session Monday

Merdeka.com – The Civil Society Coalition will attend the first trial of the alleged defamation case of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan once morest the accused Director Lokataru Haris Azhar and KontraS Coordinator Fatia Maulidiyanti, on Monday (3/4) tomorrow.

It is known that Haris Azhar and Fatia were charged with violating Article 27 paragraph 3 in conjunction with Article 45 paragraph 3 of Law (UU) Number 19 of 2016 concerning amendments to Law 11/2008 concerning ITE, Article 14 paragraph 2 a subsidiary of Article 15 Law 1/1946 concerning Regulations Criminal Law, or Article 310 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph 1 1st of the Criminal Code.

“We will come and will invite colleagues to appear at the District Court Jakarta Timur at 10 o’clock to hear directly how the state through its official Pak Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan did not accept public criticism and reported the charges to Haris and Fatia,” said a representative of the Civil Society Coalition, M. Isnur to journalists, Sunday (2/4).

Isnur said that the articles charged once morest Haris and Fatia were often used to criminalize activists and journalists. As a result, according to Isnur, people are not allowed to criticize the government.

“These are articles that are used to criminalize many people, many activists, many anti corruptionand journalists because they speak, they are critical,” said the head of YLBHI.

Not only that, Isnur also regretted Luhut’s attitude as a public official who was easily offended by public criticism. In fact, this criticism is part of democracy that public officials need to hear so that Indonesia can become better.

“We will not silence Haris and Fatia and then be led to guilt. We will be led the other way around that this is a democracy where people can talk and public officials must listen, don’t get carried away,” said Isnur.

Therefore, he hopes that the trial can proceed fairly and that the judge is not afraid of power.

“The state should be grateful to Fatia and Haris for having the courage to speak up and not just being silent, and the state should protect them, because they are human rights defenders who are protected by international regulations,” said Isnur.

“We urge the court not to submit to power, not to be afraid of Pak Luhut and then release Fatia and Haris,” he added. [bal]
