Mumbai, Tilak Verma 84* for 38 in last 2 overs; Bangalore set a target of 172 runs

Bengaluru: Mumbai Indians set a target of 172 runs once morest Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first match of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Losing the toss and going into bat, Mumbai reached a better score on the strength of youngster Tilak Verma’s brilliant half-century. Mumbai scored 171 runs at the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Thilak Verma, who came to the crease fifth, remained unbeaten on 84 off 46 balls. Tilak Verma’s innings includes nine fours and four sixes. Youngster Nehal Vadhera, who played his debut match, showed strength with 21 runs off 13 balls. Nehal’s innings includes one four and two sixes. Arshad Khan remained unbeaten on 15 off nine balls.

Meanwhile, skipper Rohit Sharma, superstar Suryakumar Yadav and others disappointed in Mumbai Indians line-up. Rohit was dismissed for one run off 10 balls. Suryakumar scored 15 runs off 16 balls with just one four. Ishan Kishan (10 off 13 balls), Cameron Green (five off four balls), Tim David (four off seven balls) and Hrithik Shokeen (five off three balls) also disappointed.

Tilak Verma and Nehal, who completed a half-century partnership for the fifth wicket for Mumbai, who were at 20 runs for three and 48 runs for four at one stage, ensured a better score. Both of them scored 50 runs in 30 balls. Later, Tilak Verma added 48 runs from just 18 balls with Arshad Khan for the unbroken eighth wicket to take Mumbai to 170. Mohammad Siraj and Harshal Patel scored 38 runs in the last two overs.

Karan Sharma conceded 32 runs in four overs and took two wickets for Royal Challengers. Mohammad Siraj conceded 21 runs in four overs and took one wicket. Siraj gave away only 5 runs in the first three overs and then gave away only 16 runs in the 19th over. A total of 11 balls were bowled in this over, including five wides.

Reece Topley conceded 14 runs in two overs, Harshal Patel conceded 43 runs in four overs and Mitchell Bracewell conceded 16 runs in two overs with one wicket each. Only Glenn Maxwell, who conceded 16 runs in an over, did not get a wicket among the bowlers in the Bangalore line-up.

Meanwhile, injured Reece Topley did not take the field following the first two overs. It has been confirmed that the player will not play further in this match.
