Fans of sodas who have turned to watered down versions may also be victims of health concerns.
A study by Inserm in partnership with the Sorbonne Paris-Nord University carried out among 100,000 French people shows that in addition to their inability to lose weight (or at least not to gain it), aspartame, acesulfame K or sucralose often present in light drinks increase the risk of vascular disease by 9% with a stroke probability up by…18%.
Light drinks increase the risk of vascular disease by 9%
It is important to note here that the figures given by Inserm are certainly underestimated since the candidates of the study were not among the most important consumers of drinks – light sodas… Let us also remember that the researchers affirm that sodas have detrimental effects on memory, as indicated by another study published in the British Medical Journal.
Artificial sweeteners can inhibit liver protein
The sweeteners used indiet sodas can interfere with the liver’s ability to process certain medications. Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin (USA) have discovered that certain artificial sweeteners such as sucralose and acesulfame potassium have the ability to inhibit liver proteins, reports the DailyMail.
“We observed that sweeteners* impacted activity in liver cells at concentrations expected through food and beverage consumption, well below the maximum limits recommended by the FDA” indicated Doctor Stéphanie Olivier Van Stichelen.
85% of diet soda drinkers have dental erosion
Finally, 85% of diet soda drinkers have dental erosion, compared to 84% of coffee and tea drinkers and 76% of classic soda drinkers, notes the ‘JDR Clinical and Translational Research’.
* Aspartame was not included in this research.
