The news regarding the poverty index published in the last hours by INDEC regarding the second semester of 2022, in which it showed an increase, reaching 18 million people (39.2%), has not yet become angry.
In Argentina there are provinces in which people live with a little more than 2 dollars of daily income. The data comes from the consultant Focus Market who produced a report to measure Where does poverty hit the hardest in Argentina?although in this case he gave it a twist and used as a thermometer to the dollar. The data showed the worrying reality that in the country the average income in green bills in many cases does not reach two dollars per day.
The consultancy run by the economist Damián Di Pace reveals numbers of a painful reality, and even more so when compared with neighboring countries. In fact, while the average income in Argentina is US$222 on a monthly basis (the nominal values valued at the parallel dollar were taken as methodology), andn Brazil or Uruguay in comparative terms are u$s 370 yu$s 772, far removed from local numbers.
Social classes and consumption: far from the “middle class”, today Argentina is heterogeneous
How much money is earned per day in the different provinces?
When evaluating the Per capita daily income in different corners of the country, while in CABA and Córdoba they have US$8 and US$4.25 respectively, at the opposite end are provinces such as Chaco and Formosa that live on average US$2.76 and US$2.78 respectively per day .
The curve with the data that we share below shows that, following the city of Buenos Aires, the provinces with the highest income are Patagonia. Thus, the second city with the highest income in the country is Tierra del Fuego (7.68 dollars/day/inhab), followed by Chubut ($6.06), and Santa Cruz with $5.78. and 5.23 Neuquén.
At the other extreme, among the provinces with the lowest daily income in dollars, in addition to Chaco and Formosa, La Rioja appears with less than 3 dollars per day; and Santiago del Estero with just a few hundredths above 3 dollars a day. Roughly speaking, and measured in parallel, this is something like 1,200 pesos a day,
Beyond the reality raised, perhaps what is most striking is what Di Pace, director of the consultancy, analyzes, while he does not identify plans to reverse this situation in the long term. “Argentina needs to start proposing deep reforms and make our society aware of their importance. From where we are and where we should go,” he indicated and added that far from this, “our politicians are in the chicana of party internships, of responses to the situation and media agenda, of campaign polls and search for trending issues so as not to lose visibility.”
Agustín Salvia: “The poverty rate will be close to 39%”
And while we continue to hear as a mantra that our country has the resources and conditions to be in another situation, the reality continues to be very harsh. More than half of the boys in Argentina are poor.
Another look: income according to occupation
The analysis also includes the average income by occupation and the gap with and without a retirement discount in dollars, that is, people who are blank and informal. There they found very deep distances.
In Catamarca the gap in dollars is 131%, in Corrientes it is 215%, in Misiones 173%, in Tucumán 146%.
What is needed to change this reality?
For the economist, a “stable and predictable economic policy, controlled and declining inflation, stable interest rates, strong currency, being attractive to private investment and creating a favorable environment for business” are needed.
And I add: “We need to improve the productivity of our economy through highways, ports, airports, telecommunications and energy without the public sector being an obstacle but rather the gateway. We need a stable political and legal environment; knowing that if I put a business the rules are in favor of the one who put it and risked it so that it produces more and more, that if the State goes badly adjusts the State does not take the private person hostage so that they pay with their business that business that the politician within the State He doesn’t want to lose,” he said.
