a frikandel with sauce in a spring roll jacket

Amstelveen, what is going on? I’m not worried, quite the contrary, but something is going on in this town. Because where you can only find normal frikandellen in Amsterdam, Amstelveners can find them at Mr. Ed went for a frikandel XXL and apparently Carels Cafeteria in Amstelveen is also the place to be if you fancy the spring roll. I can already hear you, enjoying your cup of coffee at the breakfast table, surprised: ‘loempidel?’ Yes, it is a frikandel, but wrapped in the well-known spring roll jacket. The difference with the viandel (the crunchy version of the frikandel) is that the inside of this wonderful snack is supplemented with a sweet sauce that is reminiscent of a light version of hoisin sauce. Wonderful.

The only downside is that the egg roll is a bit too thin – they say ‘less is more’, but that really never applies to frikandellen. Anyway, it is the showpiece of Carels Cafeteria, which also sells the XXL and the coarse variant of the frikandel. In addition, they sell fries with babi pangang or smoor, in other words: reason enough to come back.

There is also good news for the vegetarians among us: the egg roll is also available in a vegetarian variant, invented and launched a few years ago by YouTube great Dylan Haegens. Fun fact for a drink (snack).
