20 centuries of Art History

It’s a real dive through 20 centuries of Art History that awaits visitors from 6 years old. “Money in Art” covers more than 20 centuries of art history on the theme of the complex relationship between art and money, from Antiquity and its myths to the present day. Money feeds the collective imagination indefinitely. It is therefore natural for artists to take up this subject, both to represent money as an object of transaction, but also to convey a message, by illustrating its use in a constantly changing society. The relationship between art and money multiplied and changed over the centuries. From the representation of the ancient myth, justifying the divine creation of money, or of the Catholic Church denouncing its amoral use, to the purely transactional themes of the 16th century in connection with the Protestant Reformation, and up to the invention of the art market in the 19th century, a marker of a fundamental break which asserted itself in the 20th century, this relationship has continued to change. The artist is no longer satisfied with representing themes and characters linked to money, he engages in a reflection on its mechanisms. Whatever the artists, the works, the periods or the themes addressed, the 200 or so works on display challenge the visitor on his own representation of money, and explore all the facets of the real or fantastic relationships that artists have with the world. ‘money.
