Lebanon – Q&A – Extract from the press briefing (30.03.23)

Q – For Lebanon, there were visits this week to Paris by Lebanese officials who had talks with French counterparts. Is there any news regarding Lebanon, and is there a meeting of the group of 5 on Lebanon scheduled soon in Paris, following up on what happened a few weeks ago ?

R – I have no information on meetings that would have been held this week. What I can repeat to you is France’s well-known position with regard to Lebanon: the acknowledgment of our concern in the face of the seriousness of the situation, at the economic level, of course, but also of the impasse policy that continues in Lebanon. As we have had the opportunity to recall several times, here, the solution, for us, is known and it is simple: it is the election of a President of the Republic who unites, the entry into office of a full-fledged government and finally the implementation of reforms which are more than ever essential to a way out of the crisis; reforms that make it possible to meet the expectations of the Lebanese population. I don’t have any more information in this regard. There was indeed this meeting of the working group, a few weeks ago, but I do not know of a new date scheduled for a new meeting in this format.

Q – On the follow-up to my previous question, just a question on the method and the principle: if, for example, Daesh creates a terrorist group in another country, using its old cadres, the majority of them constitute a new terrorist group in a new country, will this group be recognized as terrorist by France or not?

R – I make a point of not answering hypothetical questions. Thank you very much for this question.
