Marc Márquez swept away Miguel Oliveira in the third corner of the third lap of the race in Portimão and was hit with a double long lap penalty by the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
The problem: The message sent on Sunday at 5:21 p.m. by the FIM World Motorcycling Association and promoter Dorna expressly states that the Spaniard will receive his double long-lap penalty for the “Gran Premio Michelin de la Republica Argentina MotoGP Race”. .
This wording caused an uproar because at that point it was already expected that Marquez would miss the aforementioned Argentina GP due to injury. Because he suffered a fracture of the first metacarpal bone on the thumb of his right hand in the crash.
That prompted the FIM to issue a clarification on Tuesday. As a result, because Marc Márquez is not participating in the Argentine GP, he will have to serve the double long-lap penalty the next time he participates in a full-distance MotoGP race on a Sunday.
So the error was corrected.
However, the Repsol Honda Team does not simply accept this, as a statement distributed on Wednesday makes clear: “Regarding the sanction that the FIM imposed on Marc Márquez for the racing accident at the Portuguese GP, the Repsol Honda Team is of the opinion that changing the sentence amounts to changing the criteria for when the sentence should be served. The fact that this change was made by the FIM two days following the original sanction was final and definitive does not correspond to the current FIM regulations for the MotoGP World Championship.
This was followed by the announcement: «For this reason, the Repsol Honda Team intends to use all the remedies offered by the regulations in force to defend its rights and legitimate interests, which it considers violated as a result of the recent decision, and has lodged an appeal with submitted to the FIM Appeal Stewards.»
