(Cairo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon = Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under strong pressure from both sides for and once morest the legislation to neutralize the judiciary promoted by the Israeli ruling coalition, is expected to announce his position soon.
According to local media on the 27th (local time), Prime Minister Netanyahu held a press conference this morning and was scheduled to announce his position on legislation promoted by the ruling party under the name of ‘judicial overhaul’.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to announce the results of his overnight discussions following he fired Defense Minister Yoav Galland, who called for an end to judicial overhaul legislation the day before.
However, Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly postponed his position announcement as opposition from the ruling party grew, with national security minister Itamar Ben-Gbir, a representative far-right member of the coalition government, urging that the legislation should not be suspended.
In the midst of this, the Constitutional Law and Judiciary Committee of the Knesset (Parliament) concluded its hearing on the key bill for judicial overhaul that day and passed the bill to the plenary session.
If only the last vote of the plenary session is passed, the powers of the Supreme Court will be reduced, and the ruling party will be able to take charge of the composition of the committee in charge of judicial personnel.
With everyone’s eyes on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s mouth, the level of pressure on him has increased more than ever.
Anti-government protests intensified following the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Galland, who openly called for the suspension of legislation in a live televised speech on the 25th.
Immediately following the announcement of the dismissal, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest the dismissal of Minister Galland.
They waved Israeli flags and blocked roads everywhere, including on major highways in Israel. They even set fire to the middle of the road.
Some protesters crowded in front of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem and clashed with police as they tried to break through the barricades and also confronted police in front of the Knesset (Parliament).
In the midst of this, even President Yitzhak Herzog stepped forward and said, “I urge the immediate suspension of the legislative process for the unity and responsibility of the Israeli people.”
In addition, the chairman of the labor group Hisradut (Israel Workers’ General Federation) also declared a general strike struggle through a statement that day, saying, “It is time for everyone to put Israel back on the right track.”
Hisradut is the largest labor organization with regarding 800,000 members, which is close to 10% of Israel’s total population.
The Israeli Medical Federation also put pressure on the government to stop medical services from the 28th unless the judicial overhaul legislation is suspended.
Members of the Likud Party, the first ruling party led by Netanyahu, and some ministers in the coalition government are said to have urged the suspension of legislation on judicial overhaul or expressed their opinion that they would follow the Prime Minister’s decision to suspend legislation.
On the other hand, national security secretary Ben-Gbir, who has been leading the hardline movement of Netanyahu’s coalition government, sent a message on Twitter saying, “The government must continue judicial reform. It must not give in to the anarchists.”
Ben-Gbir had previously urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to dismiss Galant following former Defense Minister Gallant publicly called for an end to legislation over judicial overhaul.
Meanwhile, Ben-Gurion International Airport, the gateway to Israel amid extreme confrontation over judicial maintenance, announced that aircraft take-offs were suspended that day.
