Father and Son Tragically Discovered Deceased on Boat in Aalst Drama

The bodies of a father, 48, and his son, 20, were discovered on a boat in the region of Aalst (Herdersem). The mayor of the municipality, Christoph D’Haese, confirmed the news and stated that an autopsy and inquiry will be carried out to determine the cause of death. The two individuals, originally from Wallonia, lived separately from the community and lived under poor conditions. The circumstances surrounding their deaths are being treated as suspicious. The families of the victims have been informed through the police in Charleroi and Liège.


The lifeless bodies of a 48-year-old father and his 20-year-old son were found on a boat in the district of Aalst (Herdersem), confirmed on Sunday the mayor of this municipality in East Flanders, Christoph D ‘Haese. An autopsy and inquest should determine the cause of death.

Both bodies were found on a makeshift barge. The news was communicated by the harbor master’s office, said the mayor. According to him, the two deceased people, originally from Wallonia, had no contact with the other inhabitants, and did not speak Dutch. Both lived isolated in precarious conditions, added Mr. D’Haese, referring to “particularly sad” facts.

The deaths are referred to as a “suspicious double death”. The judicial inquiry will now have to determine the exact cause of death and whether it is an accidental death. The families of the victims were informed through the Charleroi and Liège police.
