Mild pneumonia: understand Lula’s situation

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was diagnosed with mild pneumonia on Thursday (23/3). Although Lula’s general condition is considered good, he had to postpone his trip to China by one day and will undergo a new evaluation before leaving.

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi, which are transmitted through the air, saliva or secretions.

People of any age group can be diagnosed with pneumonia, but children up to 2 years old and adults over 65 years old are considered more vulnerable.

“The elderly are more fragile and prone to pneumonia because they usually have some associated comorbidity, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and smoking”, explains pulmonologist Gilda Elizabeth da Fonseca, a physician at Hospital Brasília Unidade Águas Claras.

Gilda draws attention to the importance of treatment so that the condition does not evolve. The first symptoms of pneumonia are similar to the common cold. They include:

  • Dry cough or with mucus;
  • high fever;
  • Shortness of breathe;
  • Lung pain;
  • Yellow phlegm;
  • Tiredness;
  • fatigue and
  • Loss of appetite.

“These symptoms often do not worry the patient. It is important to make it clear that mild pneumonia can evolve if not treated”, says the doctor.

Treatment

Treatment for pneumonia varies depending on the type of infection. The most common is bacterial, which is fought with antibiotics. Depending on the severity of the case, the patient may be medicated at home or need hospitalization.

On medical advice, the president had his agenda this Friday (24/3) suspended and should spend the day resting at Palácio da Alvorada. In addition, he is on antibiotics.

According to Gilda, who did not have access to Lula’s medical records, rest and good nutrition are crucial for any patient’s recovery.

The diplomatic trip was transferred to Sunday (3/26).
