Chapter 4″ is a massacre at the North American box office

The fourth installment in the “John Wick” saga from Lionsgate studios caused a stir at the North American box office for its release, raking in $73.5 million between Friday and Sunday, according to specialist firm Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

“A superb release,” noted expert David A. Gross, noting that each sequel to a “John Wick” movie has managed to surpass its predecessor.

Critics are generally rave regarding the film for which Keanu Reeves is once once more the headliner, as a hitman fighting an international criminal group.

“If only all action films were as well and as cleanly choreographed,” raved the Washington Post – even if for some, the very high toll (more than 100 deaths during the film) is a little too much exaggerated.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” owes much of its choreography to its director Chad Stahelski, himself a former stuntman. Alongside Keanu Reeves are Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard and Laurence Fishburne.

In second place, the DC studios film “Shazam! The Rage of the Gods” collected only $9.7 million for its second week of exploitation. According to the specialized magazine Variety, the figure represents “one of the worst attendances for a recent superhero film”.

Next in the ranking is the new episode of the “Scream” saga, “Scream VI”, with 8.4 million dollars in revenue.

The boxing film “Creed III”, in the “Rocky” universe, is in fourth place, having grossed $8.4 million for its 4th week of exploitation.

In fifth place, down one spot from last weekend: sci-fi thriller “65,” with $3.3 million. Adam Driver stars in this time travel story that juxtaposes spaceships and dinosaurs.

Here’s the rest of the top 10:

6. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($2.4 million)

7. “Crazy Bear” (2,1 millions)

8. “Jesus Revolution” (2 millions)

9. “Champions” (1,5 million)

10. “Avatar 2: The Way of Water” (1.4 million)
