Morena is a young, flirtatious woman who is addicted to shopping. She checks store websites every day and goes to stores frequently to satisfy her impulses. Morena provides excuses to justify her constant purchases. She is a familiar face in the Charleroi shopping center and frequents the shops several times a week. In addition, she checks merchant sites as soon as she wakes up to ensure she does not miss any bargains. Morena compares going to the mall to being in paradise, but it has become her version of hell.
Morena admits to being addicted to shopping as it affects 5% of the population in France, and 8% of students are affected. She refers to her behavior as “compulsive” as she goes to clothing stores, buys without much thought, and without trying on the clothes. Morena expresses that she cannot resist buying things and always finds something to purchase. The young woman acknowledges that she does not need everything she buys but enjoys buying new items for her dressing room.
Morena is aware of her shopping addiction and does not want to draw too much attention from her parents, with whom she still lives. So she uses strategies to receive the deliveries at her grandmother’s house, as her parents are unhappy regarding the number of parcels she receives each week. Morena makes approximately ten online orders each month, excluding the purchases she makes in stores.
As with any addiction, shopping has a cost, and Morena finances her expenses through student jobs and her parents’ support. However, she plans to become financially independent when she sets up on her own.
A solution for her addiction may be on the horizon as Morena intends to take control of her spending habits. A Large Format program, “When shopping becomes a drug,” is available on RTL Play.
