Three minors used by a family in Itagüí for drug extortion and sales

On March 24, 2023, the Police Gaula, in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office, arrested six adults and detained three minors from a single family. They are accused of being involved in a criminal organization that extorted more than 200 businesses and individuals in the Itagüí municipality. According to authorities, the accused forced citizens to pay fines between 500,000 to 2 million pesos to continue their work or personal activities. The group also used their children to receive the extortion money and to sell hallucinogenic substances in different neighborhoods. The authorities estimate that the group had been evading the payment of approximately 100 million pesos per month from extortion and drug sales. The group faces charges of extortion, conspiracy to commit a crime, forced displacement, and theft. The Metropolitan Police of the Aburrá Valley urges the community to report such incidents that put people’s safety and belongings at risk.

The Police Gaula, together with the Attorney General’s Office, captured six adults and apprehended three minors, all members of the same family, accused of forming a true criminal enterprise which would have extorted more than 200 establishments business and people in the municipality of Itagüí.

According to the authorities, these people engaged in extortion in the form of fines to citizens, demanding sums of money between 500,000 pesos and 2 million pesos, in order to authorize the continuity of their work or personal activities so as not to cause them damage.

These people used their children to receive the money from the different extortions and likewise gave them instructions to injure people who did not deliver this money, in addition, they instrumentalized them to sell hallucinogenic substances in the different neighborhoods of the municipality of Itagüí, in order not to arouse suspicion. With this operation it was possible to avoid the payment of approximately 100 million pesos per month, product of extortion and sale of drugs.

Due to the above, these people were placed at the disposal of the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation for the crimes of extortion, conspiracy to commit a crime, forced displacement and theft. rated and aggravated, along with 4 seized cell phones.

The Metropolitan Police of the Aburrá Valley asked the community to denounce these events that put the physical integrity and economic heritage of people at risk to line 165.
