Anthony Cartagena caused surprise by confessing that he did not feel comfortable working with his brother Wilmer in the musical duo “Los Hermanos Cartagena”. The two had worked together for a long time and performed regularly in different places around the country.
“I don’t know if I lost 10 or 8 years of my life or gained other things… I think it was more loss than gain”, Antonio pointed out during the interview conducted by Carlos Orozco; to the surprise of netizens and followers of the singer.
Why did the Cartagena brothers distance themselves?
In a later stage of the interview, the salsa player Wilmer Cartagena affirmed that his role in the musical group was more of a manager. He explained that he had less and less participation in the decisions, since his brother liked to take the main role and he was the one who made most of the final decisions, such as the number of songs to perform, what songs to play in the presentations, what contracts to accept, among other aspects.
Despite the difficulties he had to face working with his brother, Wilmer indicated that the situation came to a head shortly before the pandemic. At that time, the youngest of the Cartagenas tried to improve the image of the orchestra following his brother had some media problems, which led to a discussion between the two.
Wilmer Cartagena reported that his brother Antonio rejected the opportunity to participate in a virtual concert at the Casa de la Salsa, but the discussion did not end there. At Wilmer’s insistence, Antonio used vulgar words and verbal attacks towards his younger brother.
“That was the straw that broke the camel’s back and I told him: ‘Antonio, you will never disrespect me once more in your life.’ He treated me as if I were a choro, with smoothness (…) I told him: ‘You were wrong regarding me, Antonio. So far I’m just with you.’ That was the discussion, because I was already fed up and I got tired ”, confessed the singer.
In addition, he indicated that Antonio told his mother and close relatives that he stole money from her, something that made him angry and for this reason he decided “for now, I might not forgive him.”
