This is the scene that did not give a good image of this match of the 3rd day of the CAN 2023 qualifiers between Benin and Rwanda at the General Mathieu Kérékou (GMK) stadium in Cotonou.
A story related to the Rwandan goalkeeper’s towel has been shaking the canvas since the final whistle of the Benin vs Rwanda match.
Indeed, while the Cheetahs were in difficulty to equalize the goal conceded in the 13th minute of play, a Beninese supporter in white approached the Rwandan goalkeeper’s cage and stole his white towel. Taken back by the police, the man will have acted very wisely in favor of the foals of Gernot Rohr.
Two minutes later, in the 82nd minute, Benin through Steeve Mounié equalized.
Regarding the incident, opinions were divided; some very early on indicated that the removal of the towel from the Rwandan goalkeeper would be the cause of Benin’s equaliser.
At a press conference, Beninese coach Gernot Rohr was asked regarding the subject. But for the former Franco-German coach, his concern remained on the balance sheet of this draw conceded by Benin at home.
« I did not understand what happened. It’s not my problem. On the other hand, I saw a penalty which was not given. The towel is not my problem Rohr replied.
Last in Group L with 1 point, Benin will have to beat Rwanda in the return match, still at the GMK stadium next Monday.
