Youth movements represent approximately 125,000 children in Belgium. After participating in various and varied activities throughout the year, it is in summer that the “camp” comes to reward them.

Problem, with the change in the school rhythm, it is difficult for all the children to find a place to spend this famous camp.

Two weeks ago, the senator of the party “Les engaged”, Anne-Catherine Goffinet, publicly raised the issue. According to her, the youth movements were still looking for 275 buildings and 179 meadows to spend their July camp.

This increase in demand inevitably increases prices, so it is difficult to find a 100% welcoming place at a fair price”.

No way to plan camps in August either because of the second sessions in higher education. “In my opinion, we must put in place incentives for landlords and mobilize certain public authorities to resolve this problem, which has been taken into account late. This must be the object of the Task Force put in place since September”, explains the senator before adding: “Once this situation has been resolved, it will also be necessary to take into account the youth movements during the reform of the higher education calendar. to prevent the problem from repeating itself.

In conclusion, the issue of finding suitable spaces for youth camps during summer holidays in Belgium remains a challenge. The reduction of summer holidays duration has contributed to the enormous pressure on the limited availability of camp places, resulting in increased prices that are out of reach for many parents. The Task Force set up since September must act quickly to find incentives for landlords and mobilize public authorities to help resolve this issue. It is also essential to consider the youth movements’ needs during the higher education calendar reform to prevent the problem from reoccurring. Providing children with the opportunity to participate in these camps plays a vital role in their development and should not be limited due to a lack of available spaces.
