Several US lawmakers ask that the Armed Forces of that country be able to carry out operations on Mexican soil to combat fentanyl trafficking.
Sputnik World – At a major event held in Mexico City’s Zócalo, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned that his government would never allow the US Army to intervene in the Latin American country to allegedly fight organized crime.
Faced with the insistence of several US legislators that the Armed Forces of that country can carry out operations on Mexican soil to combat fentanyl trafficking, the Mexican president was emphatic in stating that this strategy does not even exist as a possibility.
“From this Zócalo, the political and cultural heart of Mexico, we remind hypocritical and irresponsible politicians[dos Estados Unidos] that Mexico is an independent and free country, not a colony or protectorate of the United States, and that they can threaten to commit any outrage, but we will never allow them to violate our sovereignty and trample on the dignity of our homeland,” López Obrador said in front of tens of thousands of people, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the Petroleum Expropriation.
He also considered that congressmen and former officials who have proposed interventionist policies in Mexico — such as Lindsey Graham, John Kennedy and Mike Pompeo — “are used to seeing the speck in others’ eyes and not the beam in their own eyes.”
According to the president, these politicians made such suggestions “in a propaganda plan” and “for electoral and political purposes”.
“They argued that if we didn’t stop fentanyl trafficking on the northern border, they would propose to their country’s Congress that American soldiers occupy our territory to face organized crime,” said López Obrador.
The president also indicated that Mexico has energy and food security among its main objectives, as he has repeatedly said that the economic crisis caused by Covid-19 and Western sanctions once morest Ukraine are lessons that all emerging economies must learn in order not to depend on foreign inputs.
“We can guarantee that oil sovereignty is being guaranteed. Next year we will not buy gasoline, diesel or other oil derivatives abroad. We will process all of our raw materials,” said López Obrador.
Likewise, he took the opportunity to comment on the issue of presidential succession, which will take place in 2024, when the federal elections take place. According to him, the “transformation process” he is leading will continue if someone from his party, Morena, remains in power.
“I am convinced that any of the candidates who win the poll to elect the candidate of our movement will apply the same policy in favor of the people and in favor of the nation. Continuity is assured”, he affirmed.
