Mighty stone formations can be admired at the portal of the Salzburg Neutor on the Riedenburg side. The two obelisks were carved out of the Mönchsberg conglomerate. Whoever approaches them sees the layers of gravel enclosed in the grey-brown rock. Behind it, the rock face rises steeply, which has also been worked on over and over again over the centuries.
The statue of St. Sigismund and the coat of arms of Prince-Archbishop Siegmund Christoph Graf von Schrattenbach (Sigismund III.), in whose tenure the tunnel was cut through the mountain in 1764-66, are emblazoned above the west portal.
