(Ecofin Agency) – In Morocco, the research and development capacities of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the opportunities offered by new industrial technologies support the production of green manures.
The developer of renewable energy technologies, 247Solar, announced on March 14 the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Polytechnic University Mohammed VI of Morocco. Under the MoU, the two parties will jointly explore the production of green hydrogen and ammonia using 247Solar’s next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP) and energy storage technologies. ‘thermal energy.
The studies will seek in part to demonstrate the feasibility and competitiveness of 247Solar’s innovative CSP technology to generate electricity to power hydrogen and green ammonia plants to decarbonize fertilizer production.
The Moroccan group OCP, the world’s leading producer of phosphates, is participating in this effort through an investment in a green ammonia plant with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per year in 2027 and 3 million tonnes per year in 2032.
“Fertilizer production is another important sector to decarbonize as the world seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change. OCP has already announced a historic investment of $13 billion to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 for its own operations and carbon neutrality for indirect emissions by 2040. We are delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to this effort. said Bruce Anderson, CEO of 247Solar.
OCP has a growing interest in green hydrogen and green ammonia, a sector that will allow it to enter the market for green manures and fertilization solutions adapted to the specific needs of different soils and crops.
