“principle of secularism is not against religions” – MALI24

This statement was made by the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, government spokesman Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga this Friday, March 10, 2023, thanks to a meeting with media men. It is clear how the rock water declines today the position of the highest authorities of the country with regard to the question relating to the “Secularism” in the draft constitution.

According to the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, government spokesman, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga the reason for setting up the commission to finalize the draft constitution is to find a consensus with all the players on the points of divergence in order to take into account the major concerns of Malians.

For the spokesman of the government with regard to secularism, the approach adopted in the draft constitution an effort has been made to define this principle of secularism by indicating that the “secularism” is not once morest religions, because somewhere, it was the great concern of some Malians. And today, despite its progress, the Malian League of Imams and Scholars for Islamic Solidarity (Priest) is still not satisfied.

According to the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, government spokesman, the principle of “secularism” has always figured in all the constitutions of Mali since independence and somewhere it is this principle of secularism which has somewhat allowed the emergence of several associations and religious movements, including LIMA . “And it’s curious that the principle that favored your emergence can be fought by an association despite the government’s efforts to show that secularism is not once morest any religion” he insists.

He also underlined that when we make an objective analysis of the situation today, Mali is not in a security crisis because of the “secularism” and we don’t have the luxury of polarizing over one word, there are urgencies and priorities to consider and it’s important for LIMA to reconsider its position.

For the General Secretary of LIMAMA, Gaoussou Sidiki Mainta, in the draft constitution of Mali, the term “secularism” should be replaced by “multi-confessional state. because secularism is a trick that rulers use as they please to padlock religion(s).
