RaRRR and The Elephant Whisperers are the two films that are being discussed around the world today. The Elephant Whisperers, which competed in the documentary short category, was the first to make India proud at the Oscars this time. Kerala is also proud of the achievement of this film as the story takes place in a place close to Kerala and the cast includes Malayalees. Elephant Whisperers’ Foley recordist Arjun Verma and his Foley studio Molecules in Kochi are happy to have played a small part in the film’s success.

Arjun is the only son of Ernakulam Tripunithura Chandravarma and late Chandravalli. Studied at Dinesh Ramalingam’s Dynamics School of Audio Engineering College in Chennai. Arjun’s approach to Foley recording was in anticipation of the possibility of creatively creating a lot of sounds in Foley. The film Alangam was finally released. She has done films like Momo in Dubai, Solomon’s Bees, Bommai Nayaki and Mayon in Tamil. In this, Anthony Reuben, the sound recordist of Bommai Nayaki, also did the sound of Elephant’s Whisperers. For the last two years Arjun has been doing Follies in the same studio. That’s how Arjun comes to The Elephant Whisperers.

A foley recordist’s job is to record the sounds made by people walking, sitting, and moving objects. That is to record the sound of inanimate objects. If you look at the movie Elephant Whisperers, the sound of the elephant’s chain scraping the ground is an example. There will also be an artist creating this sound in the studio. That is the folly artist. Arjun says that if you want to make the sound of an elephant chain crawling on the ground, one has to artificially create the sound inside the studio.

Arjun said that he had not received any specific instructions regarding sound recording. Nikhil Verma, who is also the owner of the studio, is the supervising editor of Foley. I got the file following the shoot. There was no need to go to the location. First it was said that it is a documentary short film. When I saw it, it felt like a cute movie. But Arjun said that he did not expect to get such a reach.

Elephant Sound was recorded in six days. The chain made its sound. The sound of the elephant walking was made by pressing hard on the boxing gloves. Boxing gloves were placed on specially prepared soil. Subbayya Pillai was the folly artist. Raj Marthandam, Murugan and others are also here. He was kneading the rice to the sound of kneading the food to give to the elephant. Arjun’s words that he usually does the same for such scenes.

Arjun said that some films are told to do a bit of exaggeration. CB Sathyaraj starrer Mayon is the movie that did that. It has a big snake crawling scene. Boiled noodles have been used to record its sound. And that scene was done in different layers by adding some other sounds. Arjun also recalled that in the film Solomon’s Bees, the sound of the prison cell was made by hanging a large gate.

Arjun is all set to conquer new heights with new films.
