In the midst of the persistent heat wave that widely exceeded 30°C, this Monday the national electricity system registered a historical demand peak for one business day following reaching 29,089 Megawatts (MW). Said consumption is due to the high temperatures that are being registered by the heat wave. At the same time, a total of 132,698 users of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) do not have electricity.
According to a report from the Wholesale Electricity Market Administration Company (Cammesa), at 3:15 p.m. the new record for power demand of the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI) was registered, with 29,089 MW. In this way, it exceeded by 527 MW the maximum reached last Friday of 28,562 MW.
The heat does not stop and more than 20 thousand users of AMBA and CABA suffer power outages
Of the total, almost half of the demand was concentrated in Greater Buenos Aires, where the figure amounted to 11,169 MW. In second place was the province of Buenos Aires, with a consumption of 3,368 MW, followed by the NOA region with 2,591 MW and the center of the country with a similar figure of 2,577 MW. Where there was less consumption during the historical peak was in Comahue, with 837 MW.
The electricity consumption record occurred in the middle of a season marked by unprecedented extreme temperatures for the City of Buenos Aires (CABA), which this Monday exceeded the maximum temperature threshold for a heat wave for 14 consecutive days with 32.3°C and even It reached a thermal sensation of 39.4° during the followingnoon. In this sense, both in CABA and in the southern area of the Buenos Aires suburbs, a red alert was maintained due to the heat.
In parallel to historical electricity consumption, almost one hundred thousand users have no electricity. According to the State of Service updated at 7:50 p.m. from the National Electricity Regulatory Entity (ENRE), 132,698 people are without electricity this followingnoon. Of this total, 125,891 correspond to Edesur clients, while 6,807 to Edenor.
According to the ENRE, the areas most affected by the interruption of electrical service in the Buenos Aires suburbs (where Edesur supplies energy) are: Almirante Brown, Esteban Echeverría, Lanús, Avellaneda, Lomas de Zamora, Quilmes and Presidente Perón. In CABA, the neighborhoods of Villa Devoto, Mataderos, Recoleta, Balvanera and Villa Luro are affected by this problem.
For its part, under Edenor’s coverage area, the most affected areas are La Matanza, Morón, San Isidro, Tigre, Belgrano and Palermo.
