Moscow: The documentary regarding Alexei Navalny, a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and opposition leader, also won an Oscar. Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of Alexei Navalny, who was imprisoned in Russia, gave an emotional speech on the Oscar stage following accepting the award. She said she dreams of Russia becoming independent.

The ceremony in Los Angeles was attended by two of Navalny’s children and the director of the documentary.

‘My husband is in prison for telling the truth,’ Julia Navalnaya said at the 95th Annual Academy Awards. ‘Navalni’ won the Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature Film category. ‘My husband is in prison for defending democracy,’ Navalnaya continued.

“Alexei, I dream of the day when you will be free and our country will be free, be brave” – ​​said Navalnaya. Directed by Daniel Rohr, the film details the 2020 assassination attempt on Navalny and its connection to the Kremlin. Navalny was imprisoned by the Russian government in 2021. There was a massive protest all over the country demanding the release of Navalny.
