Almost 16,000 people and 5,000 homes were affected by heavy rains

According to the preliminary report of the Regional Government of La Libertad, at 1:00 pm on March 11, 2023, which considers the provinces of the north coast of the region,
Cyclone Yaku caused intense rainfall and the activation of ravines in the provinces of Chepén, Pacasmayo, Ascope and Trujillo in La Libertad. The balance is damage to homes and the health of many Liberteños.

Faced with this situation, the Regional Government of La Libertad, through the La Libertad Emergency Operations Center (COER), made a preliminary report with statistics on the families affected by the rains on the north coast of the region.

The regional governor, César Acuña Peralta, spoke regarding the humanitarian aid actions that the institution he leads will provide.

«Today the Regional Government is going to buy and deliver 10 cans of tuna, 5 kilos of rice, calamines and plastics to each family. Last night it was not possible to buy, but the GRLL will serve everyone. I left yesterday morning for Lima to travel to London, but due to my sense of responsibility I decided not to travel. We have requested two helicopters to be able to visit Trujillo and Ascope today»

After that, he avoided answering why he only took action when the rains have been affecting the mountains and coast of La Libertad for days.

Damage to property, health and life

Regarding damage to private property, COER reports that a total of 4,964 homes were affected in the four provinces. It is recorded that 771 collapsed and 283 were left uninhabitable. The districts where the most homes were affected are in Pueblo Nuevo (Chepén) with 800; Chicama (Ascope) with 600 and La Esperanza (Trujillo) with 500. Also followed by Trujillo and El Porvenir, with 450 and 400, respectively. Likewise, 600 houses collapsed between Trujillo and Pacasmayo, with 300 in each of the provinces. Those that remained uninhabitable in greater number (92) were in San Pedro de Lloc (Pacasmayo).

Regarding the damage to life and health, this morning a deceased person was registered in the El Milagro town center of the Huanchaco district in Trujillo, following being swept away by the mudslide of the El León ravine. In addition, 15,805 people were affected by the intense rainfall; being the largest in the district of La Esperanza (2090 people), Chicama (2000 people) and Pueblo Nuevo (2000 people). While 4,460 citizens of La Libertad were affected, they indicated.
