A new social network in the making

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram announced on Friday its plan to develop a brand new platform whose description seems to promote it to become a potential future competitor to Twitter.

In information disclosed by the Platformer site, the group said: “We are thinking regarding a decentralized and independent social network allowing to share written messages in real time”.

The new application would therefore be designed to be compatible with other social networks of the same type, such as Mastodon, which is considered the largest decentralized social network on the Internet.

It is a network of millions of users, which has gained relative popularity since the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk last October. Mastodon operates through decentralized servers, with no central management or decision-making authority.

Thus, this project would be a first since it constitutes a major break with the strategy that has been used until now by the tech giants; the latter have always preferred to operate in a closed environment and with their own rules of use.

The initiative comes in a very tight period for the Twitter platform, which has been losing momentum since the arrival of Elon Musk, who laid off more than half of the employees and adopted many changes. As a reminder, the latter began a series of changes on social networks shortly following taking office at the helm.

Thus, concomitantly with the innovations introduced for the sake of profitability, he also decided to reduce his costs by laying off several employees. The platform has therefore offloaded a large part of its team.

The main shareholder of Tesla and SpaceX, therefore, sees itself ready for a panoply of new decisions aimed at ensuring the return to the platform of controversial personalities who had been banned for comments deemed offensive, something that has caused concern among most platform advertisers. The latter have since declared that they want to distance themselves. In addition to these avatars, the network is very often the victim of technical breakdowns.

Considered by Meta, the decision relating to compatibility with other networks also differs from Twitter’s approach, which consists of blocking the accounts of several users who shared links to other social networks, including Facebook, Instagram or Mastodon.
