Dr. Myriam Allende is one of the women who has been part of medicine in Puerto Rico, her more than 40 years in the practice of endocrinology and his faithful commitment to the education of the new generations of doctors represent a valuable legacy for the country.
The specialist studied at the Puerto Rico School of Medicine, has a certification in internal medicine and was a professor at endocrinology at the Medical Sciences Campus for several decades.
“I was in the School of Medicine and the University Hospital for many decades, therefore, it is very gratifying to be around and see that suddenly someone says to me: “Doctor, you were my teacher.” That gives it a lot of meaning. One Having contributed as a teacher to the training of these people is very good”, acknowledged Dr. Allende.
In his family he has also marked a story. The specialist was the first to study medicine in her family nucleus, a fact that was an inspiration for her relatives, since her daughter is also a doctor and other relatives of hers decided to lean towards the areas of medicine. health.
Your interest in endocrinology began when he was studying at the School of Medicine and thanks to the great mentors he had in his training, he decided to specialize in this medical field of great importance and necessity for the health public of Puerto Rico.
“I always wanted to be with people and have that personal contact. In endocrinology I found that niche because I have the opportunity to have patients many years and have an impact on their quality of life and longevity; I like that. Also, I have to interpret a lot of labs and that’s challenging in terms of physical diagnosis and treatment,” he noted.
Throughout her medical career, Dr. Myriam Allende has received multiple awards that position her as one of the most important endocrinologists for medicine in Puerto Rico. Some of them were awarded by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Without a doubt, education is one of the words that best defines the specialist, since she has not only been a professor in medical schools, but is also the author of the book La Endocrinology in Puerto Rico (1950-2021), a compilation of the evolution of training programs in endocrinology on the Island, and regarding which he affirms that it is a legacy that cannot be forgotten.
“The practice of endocrinology It has grown vertiginously and I wanted to document the trajectory of endocrinologists in Puerto Rico and I captured it in a book. There is collected the history of the training programs in endocrinology in Puerto Rico, of which there are two, in the University Hospital and in the Hospital of the Capital of San Juan, where all the endocrinologists of this Island have been forged”, explained Dr. Allende.
“I have always been a person who has studied a lot, I have been exposed to many courses in Puerto Rico, the United States and Europe, I like to be aware of the latest treatments and not only take advantage of that education, but also bring it to Puerto Rico. “, he claimed.
Outside of the field of medicine, Dr. Myriam Allende is a wife, mother and grandmother. The company of her closest family and friends are the most important things in her life, for which she always appreciates the opportunity to share with them.
“I have 4 beautiful grandchildren and one of the greatest satisfactions in recent years is sharing with these children who are growing up, seeing their innocence and it gives me great satisfaction that they always want to share with me. My children and grandchildren are extremely important, I They give a lot of joy.”
Among his favorite hobbies, he highlights travel, good food, museums and getting to know the cultural offer of each country. “I also really like theater and musicals,” mentioned Dr. Allende in an interview for the Medicine and Health Public.
