Native Rouen (Seine Maritime), the painter Riege obtained in February 2023 the gold medal from the painting category to French Artists Fair, organized at the ephemeral Grand Palais, in Paris. His canvas Balance 43 seduced the jury of the Salon, which each year welcomes more than 650 artists.
A surprise for the painter
This gold medal, Riège did not expect it. The artist has participated in the Salon since 2017, and had already won silver and bronze. “I was really surprised to have the gold,” says the painter. For me, it wasn’t my best painting, but the jury really appreciated the technique, the originality and the message. »
A social message
Proudly exhibited in his studio, located rue Beauvoisine in Rouen, his oil on canvas Balance 43 is 43e of a long series of works, begun a year and a half ago, which have all one thing in common: the trees. This project, the artist had in mind for a long time.
At first, I painted the streets of Rouen. They are pretty, but do not say much. I really wanted to paint and convey a message.
The artist has therefore embarked on this series, which sometimes describes loneliness, difference, sometimes the passage of time, old age. So many different messages, transcribed through trees. ” For Balance 43, it is rather the instability of our society that I wanted to paint, he delivers. This rock in balance, on the edge of a precipice, but which still manages to hold on. A trifle can make us fall, but a few roots still hold us back to the earth, a certain form of hope. »
Even with gold in hand, Riège will continue to present his works at the Salon during the next sessions. This time without competing. “I can’t win the first place twice but I want to keep presenting my works. I always give 200%, the best painting will be the next”, assures the artist.
painter and teacher
In parallel with his artistic activity, Riège and his companion hold the Earth and Fire Workshops, an art school located rue du Bac, in Rouen. “We give lessons for all ages, in different fields such as painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics… We pass on what we have been taught. »
