Assam Police fake encounter killed small time farmer as dreaded dacoit, revealed in CID investigation

Guwahati: The one who was killed in an encounter by the Assam Police as a dreaded dacoit was actually a small farmer. On the issue of mistaken identity, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had ordered an inquiry in which it was revealed that the police had killed the wrong person in an encounter.

The CID in its investigation revealed that the person killed in the encounter was not dacoit Kenaram Boro alias Kenaram Basumatary, but Dibeshwar Muchahari. The family claims that he was a small farmer. But the police claim that Dimbeshwar (40) also has several criminal records.

What did the police claim?

Regarding the encounter in Udalguri on February 24, the police claimed that two people fired at them. In retaliatory action, an alleged dacoit was killed while his accomplice escaped.

Police later claimed that Kenram was killed in the encounter and his body was handed over to the family following which he was cremated.

CM had given orders for CID inquiry

On the second day, another family claimed that the person killed in the encounter was Shakta Dimbeshwar and not Kenram. A complaint was lodged with the police following which CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a CID inquiry.

The police officer said that following this the body was taken out of the grave and DNA analysis was done in which the disturbance was revealed. It came to light that the body belonged to Dimbeshwar only. After paperwork, the body was handed over to the family. Muchahari’s family said they wanted justice as the police killed their son following mistaking them for a dacoit.
