With the 3:2 (0:2; 2:0; 1:0) once morest the Detroit Red Wings, the best team of the previous regular season, the Boston Bruins, celebrated their 50th win in the 64th game of the regular season. No NHL team had ever reached the 50-win mark that early.
The previous record had been shared by two teams: in the 1995/96 season, current opponents Detroit, of all people, were there with 50 wins in 66 games. Tampa Bay Lightning also needed 66 games for 50 wins in 2018/19.

The game didn’t start well for Boston: The Red Wings were already 2-0 up following goals from Andrew Copp (2nd) and Alex Chiasson (5th). It was well into the second third before the Bruins were able to shorten through Hampus Lindholm (33′). The 1:2 gave the team from the US state of Massachusetts a boost, Patrice Bergeron (35th) equalized in the second round. In the final period, it was Garnet Hathaway who scored the 3-2 winner in the 54th minute, setting the Bruins’ record.
While Boston extended the lead in the Atlantic Division and in the Eastern Conference through the success, Detroit occupies seventh and last place in the Atlantic Division. The German national player Moritz Seider clocked 23:44 minutes ice time for the Red Wings – more than any of his teammates. However, the defender might not prevent the defeat.
