Mikaela Shiffrin breaks Ingemar Stenmark’s World Cup record – are there even 100 victories?

Mikaela Shiffrin’s mouth was open at first.

She looked breathlessly at the scoreboard, she saw the bold “1” next to her name, but she didn’t seem to have the strength to celebrate at first.

The 87th victory in the World Cup, the new, almost unimaginable record set – the American seemed overwhelmed by this moment, which had been looming for weeks, but at least since her 86th victory the day before.

Record! Shiffrin gets 87th World Cup victory

Strategically, Shiffrin had known exactly what to do. “I approached the second run as if it were its own race,” said the superstar, who was already in the lead following the first run.

Shiffrin’s plan works: “It’s great”

“You’re in front, you want to win and you have to drive both smartly and quickly,” explained Shiffrin. “I did it exactly the way I imagined it, that’s great.”

Shiffrin’s run for the history books: “She’s the greatest”

He had previously “said that Shiffrin will definitely get 100 victories. And I still believe that she will do it if she continues like this,” emphasized Ingemar Stenmark.

The Swede had his 86 World Cup victories in the 1970s and 1980s in giant slalom and slalom. More than three decades later, the record has now been broken.

Competitor Larsson celebrates: “Crazy!”

On Friday, Shiffrin initially discontinued the Stenmark brand in Are, Sweden, where she achieved her first World Cup victory in December 2012. After the success in the giant slalom, less than 24 hours later and exactly twelve years to the day following her World Cup debut, which also took place in Are, as was almost to be expected, she also took first place in the slalom. “It’s incredible,” she said with a smile on her face.

The ride to the record was befitting of the moment and worthy of a ski queen: two runs close to perfection on treacherous snow, Shiffrin ended up 0.92 seconds ahead of Wendy Holdener of Switzerland and 0.95 seconds ahead of Anna Swenn Larsson of Sweden .

The latter immediately stormed towards the new record holder and yelled at her that it was all “insane”, that is, totally crazy. In fact: twelve years, 87 victories – and no end in sight.

13 wins of the season for Shiffrin

Shiffrin has already won 13 (!) races this winter, theoretically she might even reach 90 this season.

Four competitions in downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom are on the program for the season finale in Andorra (live on TV on Eurosport 1 from March 15).

Shiffrin has won races in all disciplines, a versatility that is second to none. It’s no wonder that the US Ski Association – quite rightly – proclaimed the 27-year-old “GOAT”, the greatest of all time.
