Phil Collins’ health deteriorates

Former Genesis guitarist and bassist Mike Rutherford has updated fans on Phil Collins’ condition.

The latter has indeed experienced health problems since he injured his spine in 2007, which damaged vertebrae in the upper part of his neck and left him with nerve damage. During his last concert in March 2022, he had to perform on stage in a wheelchair.

Today Mike Rutherford spoke regarding Phil Collins’ health during an interview on BBC Breakfast to promote his upcoming tour with Mike + The Mechanics, during which Phil Collins’ son Nic will play drums.

Mike Rutherford said: “As you know Phil is a bit…He’s a lot more still than before which is a shame, but on the tour he was in good spirits.”

“He’s fine now, he’s at home, he’s enjoying life. He’s worked so hard all these years. I think he’s enjoying his time at home.”

When asked if Phil Collins or his son was the better drummer, Rutherford replied: “I always support dads because I’m from that generation. Phil is the most amazing drummer, but Nic is fantastic too. Like his dad, but a bit different.”

Nic also played drums for Genesis on their farewell tour. Mike Rutherford explains: “It was really good to have them both side by side”. Collins was unable to play drums due to his medical condition, stating on BBC Breakfast in 2021 that he might “barely hold a wand” in one hand.

He has also been walking with a cane for a few years.

Last September, Phil Collins and Genesis sold their catalog in turn. The sale is close to $300 million and concerns the rights and “master” recordings of the majority of the Genesis catalog, the solo career of Phil Collins, and the group Mike & the Mechanics.
