Pope Francis reiterated today his desire to visit Argentinabut warned that “the salvation of the country will not come” from an eventual trip to his native country, At the same time, he asked his compatriots to think “regarding the things that must be done for the country to move forward” and said that, from the year 55 onwards, “everyone has to bear the burden” of the growth of poverty.
In an interview he gave to the newspaper La Nación On the occasion of celebrating 10 years of pontificate next Monday, Argentine Pope Jorge Bergoglio once once more referred to the possibility of a visit to his native country.
«Argentina is still waiting. I want to go, I hope to go. I hope I can”, Francisco expressed and added: “Do not lose hope. Besides, the country’s salvation is not going to come from my trip. I will gladly go, but think a little regarding the things you have to do for the country to move forward“He said in a message to all Argentines.
Then the pontiff recalled once more that the trip was planned in 2017but it was finally suspended due to the elections in Chile.
“I mean, there is no refusal to go, it was planned. Then what happened is that things got complicated in another way, there were two years of pandemic that pushed through trips that had to be made necessarily, even to places where one says ‘what was he there for’, but you had to go”, he explained.
Regarding the relationship in general with the Argentines during these 10 years of pontificate, the Pope stated: «Argentines are not the Nobel Prize for simplicity. I mean, we are specialists in complications, so that doesn’t surprise me. I have always met good Argentine people who have come here, with whom I have been able to talk» and added: «I don’t know, I bet on the goodness of the Argentine people, to the great Argentine people, cheers, certainly, it is a great town».
In another section of the interview, Bergoglio referred to recent statements he made in another interview, in which he referred to the levels of poverty that Argentina currently has: “I only said that when I finished high school the poverty index was 5% I think and now it had come out that it was 52%»accurate.
«(Alberto) Fernández has been president for four years. But from 55 to here there are more than four years. Everyone, in one way or another, has to carry the owl. From 55 to here I said. What happened in between, there were more good and less good governments, but the result is this. From 5 to 52/53%, which was the data they gave that day, what happened?” the Pope wondered.
And he reflected: «We had a railway network that the English and the French left impressive, towards Rosario and towards the port area for export, right? It is no more. ohWe had airplane factories! Today, I think we import sleepers, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but with the quebracho we have? What happened? What happened?”.
Finally, when asked regarding the electoral process of this year in view of the presidential elections in October, the Pope responded: “No idea, no idea. I’m detached from it, I’m not up to date.
