The Colombian Association of Medical Schools (Ascofame) sent a letter to Carolina Corcho, Minister of Health, and Aurora Vergara, Minister of Education, to express their concern regarding the current situation of teachers in the area. According to the organization, 214 have submitted their resignations in recent weeks.
In the letter, the organization reiterates that its mission is “to ensure the quality of medical education in our country, to provide Colombian society with doctors of high technical-scientific and human quality.”
“The resignations of a significant number of teachers, particularly medical specialists, due to the changes in the tax regimes introduced in the recent tax reform”, detailed the association.
Collecting information from 32 of the 55 associated medical schools, the organization concludes that in recent weeks 214 teacher resignations and 130 provisional changes in the type of relationship have been submitted, while solutions to the situation are found.
“The most worrying thing is that the faculties anticipate that resignations will increase in the coming weeks, to the extent that many teachers are learning regarding the situation up to now,” the document added.
Thus, The association proposed to convene a working group with representatives of the ministries of Health, Education, Labor and the Dian to assess the situation and seek solutions so that teacher resignations do not continue to occur.
Faced with this, Andrés Forero, representative to the Chamber of the Democratic Center, spoke out in rejection and pointed out Minister Carolina Corcho for not noticing the possible problem during the tax reform debate.
“What a disaster Carolina Corcho’s management has been! Due to the tax authorities, 214 health teachers have resigned and the number is expected to grow. At the time, the minister did not notice this risk and now it is conspicuous by its absence. Her monomania with reform wreaks havoc,” he stated on Twitter.
In response to the trill, Lisandro Junco, former director of the Dian, recalled that he warned regarding this consequence of the tax reform several months ago, explaining that the situation unleashed as a result of the elimination of group 3 of the Simple Tax Regime.
This group was made up of those who provide professional, consulting and scientific services, in which the intellectual factor predominates. It was eliminated on the grounds that people with taxable capacity would benefit from this modality.
“Now, with the presentation on the tax reform, it is intended to end group 3, not only affecting the 21,233 registered, but also the municipalities that receive this income from ICA, the employees of the businesses in this group and the tax system. social security”, said Junco, at the time.
Annoyance of the president with the traditional parties for the health reform
According to several congressmen, President Petro did not like that these three parties have brought the document with the changes directly to the presidency of the House of Representatives without being socialized in Casa de Nariño or with the Minister of the Interior, Alfonso Prada.
In addition, the communiqué of the parties would have generated discomfort because, although it is open to consultation, the truth is that the U, liberals and conservatives would change the articles of the health initiative by 60 percent.
Congressmen have said that from the Casa de Nariño they are, supposedly, making calls to find out whether or not they support the initiative of the Petro Government and that has not been liked by the leadership of the parties that want to agree on a good health reform for Colombia either.
The truth is that this Thursday night – March 9 – has been quite busy and Dilian Francisca Toro, Efraín Cepeda and César Gaviria are not willing to give up, because they believe that the system should be improved, but not ending the advances of the last 30 years.
In fact, former President Gaviria reiterated in the last hours that “the health system should not be destroyed” so the Liberals would not change their minds.
Another trill that has generated suspicion is that of President Petro where he says that “the reforms are going” because, in the opinion of several congressmen, no one has said that they will not be processed, but simply that they want to advance in agreements to achieve good reforms.
In any case, liberals, the U and conservatives got in the way of the health reform process and are acting on the bench, in the middle of regional elections where endorsements and votes are at stake in the different regions of the country. Will they change their minds because of the supposed annoyance of President Petro?
