Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of the Lebanese “Hezbollah” group, commented on the signing of an agreement in China between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries, stressing that the agreement “will not be at the expense of the peoples of the region.”
Nasrallah said, in a speech broadcast by Al-Manar TV: “Lebanon: There are people who will rejoice, people who will be upset, people who will scratch their lot, and people who will scratch their beards, and there are people who will begin to analyze, and following them they don’t know anything regarding anything,” as he put it.
He added: “This transformation is good, and we are happy because we have confidence that this will not be at the expense of the peoples of the region, but rather in the interest of the peoples of the region and will help in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and the region, and our absolute confidence that this will not be at our expense, nor at the expense of the Yemeni people, nor at the expense of Syria, nor at the expense of Calculation of resistance.
And he continued by saying: “The first party does not want to open a problem because they want to reconcile. As for the second party, we are confident that it will not depose its owner, meaning the Islamic Republic of Iran does not take the place of the people and does not take decisions on their behalf.”
He referred to the decades-old relations between Iran and Hezbollah, saying: “We have had this relationship for 40 years, but there are those who do not understand that Iran supports the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine and does not interfere in their decisions.”
He added, “In any case, this is certainly an important development if it proceeds in its natural course, so that we do not exaggerate or rush things, because it is preliminary news, urgent news, but this, of course, may open horizons in the entire region, including Lebanon.”
And the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iran and China announced, earlier Friday, that they had reached an agreement, in Beijing, to resume diplomatic relations between Riyadh and Tehran and reopen their embassies and representations within a maximum period of two months, according to a joint statement of the three countries.
This came following more than 7 years of severing diplomatic relations between the two countries, as Saudi Arabia announced the severance of relations with Iran in January 2016, following the attack on the Kingdom’s embassy and consulate in Iran, amid Iranian protests once morest Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
