With the beginning of March of each year, the markets for sewing and selling traditional Kurdish costumes flourish, due to the increased demand for them from different age groups, as the rituals of celebrating the holidays and events celebrated by the Kurds, in this month, require the wearing of traditional costumes, with bright colors.
At this time every year, the residents of the Kurdistan region of Iraq prepare to celebrate a series of national and national occasions, foremost of which is the Newroz holidays, whose rituals require everyone to wear the distinctive popular Kurdish costumes, which increases the demand for sewing and selling them in the markets.
The designers of these men’s and women’s fashions are masterful in displaying the latest designs to attract more customers, while work continues in their workshops until dawn hours.
In this regard, he said Kurdish fashion designer and tailor, Sankar Saber, told Sky News Arabia: “The demand for Kurdish fashion is constantly increasing despite the decline in the value of the Iraqi dinar once morest the dollar, and there is a great demand for new designs, so we are forced to work until late at night, in order to Meeting customers’ requests before the Newroz holiday, and their prices range between one hundred and two hundred dollars, for one outfit.”
On the other hand, some styles of Kurdish clothing, made of goat hair, are spread on a larger scale in the regions of Zakho in the north and Horaman in the east, and their prices range from 600 to 3 thousand dollars.
For his part, the customer, Masoud Abdul Qadir, said: “I decided this year to buy this type of costume, due to the beauty of its design and the quality of its fabric, which is sewn by hand and is the secret of its high prices. It is also considered the ancient model of the old Kurdish costume, which is spread in the northern and eastern regions of the region and rarely People wear it in Erbil.”
As for the women’s costumes of bright colors, they are sewn with specially imported fabrics, and the prices of some of them reach ten thousand dollars.
