Mauritania announced on Wednesday the signing of a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of international companies including the Egyptian companies Infinity, Emirati Masdar and German Conjuncta, for the production of green hydrogen.
Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines said in a statement that the memorandum of understanding with the consortium of the three companies “aims to develop a green hydrogen production complex in three phases”.
According to the same source, a production complex for green hydrogen and its derivatives “will be created for this purpose, northeast of the capital, Nouakchott, and will be able to produce up to 8 million tonnes of green hydrogen or its equivalent in renewable fuel of non-fossil origin”.
“The first phase of this project is expected to be operational by 2028, providing employment opportunities for some 3,000 workers during construction and another 1,000 during operation,” the statement added.
Mauritania’s Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, Abesselam Ould Mohamed Saleh, said his country is “determined to play a leading role at the global level in terms of the green hydrogen economy in the decades to come.”
In a speech delivered at the signing of the agreement, Ould Mohamed Saleh added, “This project will bring environmental, economic and social benefits to our country and to the whole world.”
