A doctor warned that a lack of self-confidence might be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease.

For example, a loss of confidence may cause a person to withdraw from their usual social relationships. A lack of interest in activities that once lit you up might be a sign of an altered brain condition, says Vandelli, head of dementia at Bupa NHS UK.

As the condition worsens, you may find it difficult to plan and make decisions, and people with Alzheimer’s disease can become “easily disoriented and anxious,” according to the British Express.

“It is understood that these changes in feelings and behavior can cause a person a lot of distress and can put them at greater risk of depression,” he explains.

Other signs to watch out for include:

Difficulty remembering times and dates

Difficulty obtaining new information

Forgetting the names of familiar people and places

“It’s important to remember that no two people will experience dementia in exactly the same way,” Vandelli continues. “In Alzheimer’s disease, abnormal proteins in the brain damage cells and over time these proteins start to die. Often the early symptoms are memory lapses.”

There are other forms of dementia, such as:

Vascular dementia

Dementia with Lewy bodies

Frontotemporal dementia.

The most common is vascular dementia, in which the brain is damaged when its blood supply is reduced.

“This may happen following a stroke, and vascular dementia symptoms can progress in large or small steps,” he added.

Signs of vascular dementia

Slow thinking

Difficulty planning

Trouble understanding

Concentration problems

changes in your mood or behaviour

Memory and language problems (but not as common as they are in people with Alzheimer’s disease).

Later signs of vascular dementia can include:

Very slow thinking

Feeling confused

Memory loss and difficulty concentrating

Difficulty finding the right words

Severe personality changes, such as becoming aggressive

Depression, mood swings, lack of interest or enthusiasm

You find it difficult to walk and maintain balance, with frequent falls

Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence)

Increased difficulty with daily activities.

As for dementia with Lewy bodies, it “results from the accumulation of proteins in nerve cells.”

The condition can also cause “movement problems similar to Parkinson’s disease.”

Signs of dementia with Lewy bodies:

hallucinations

confusion or drowsiness;

Slow movement, limb stiffness and tremor

Fainting, unsteadiness and falls.

Frontotemporal dementia is most often diagnosed between the ages of 45 to 65, although people can develop it earlier or later in life.

It is a group of conditions that cause cell death in certain parts of the brain.

There are two broad types of frontotemporal dementia, which usually begin with changes in behavior, personality, emotional control, or language problems.

Signs of frontotemporal dementia:

memory problems

Difficulty planning and organizing

Speak slowly, struggling to make the correct sounds when speaking
