Lennard Kämna takes the leader’s jersey at Tirreno – Primoz Roglic returns with a stage win

Kämna finished 17th, five seconds behind Roglic, which was enough for the long-awaited jump to the top.

“I’m super happy that it was enough to take over the overall classification. I think it will be very, very difficult to defend it. But it’s a wonderful snapshot. I’m very happy regarding it,” said Kämna.

“I didn’t really think regarding the jersey because I underestimated the final lap. When we first went up, I knew I had a chance. But the race was really tough and I really struggled. In front of me there was another hole in the last corner and I just mightn’t close it anymore. But luckily it was enough. I’m really happy because this is my first leader’s jersey in a tour. Tomorrow’s climb should actually suit me better than that explosive finale today, but for now let’s just enjoy the moment,” said the 26-year-old.

Fall: Van Aert pulls Pidcock to the ground

Roglic’s teammate Wout Van Aert fell four kilometers before the finish and also knocked Tom Pidcock to the ground – the two super all-rounders were both able to continue the race, but had no chance of winning the day at the end of the three-kilometer final climb. The Belgian immediately apologized to his British rival for the mishap.

The previous leader Filippo Ganna (Italy) was no longer able to keep up the pace of the top riders in the final, the winner of the opening time trial had to give up the blue jersey of the leader following three days.

Kämna, who was second in the fight once morest the clock on the first day of the stage, is now six seconds ahead of Roglic in the classification, third is the Portuguese Joao Almeida (+0:08).

“It’s always nice to win. It’s nice to be back,” said Roglic, who is contesting his first race since last year’s Vuelta.
