Agadez celebrates International Women’s Day – focus on women’s online safety – Aïr Info

On the occasion of March 8, International Women’s Day, the Agadez Antenna of the EUCAP Sahel Niger mission supported an activity in honor of the women of Agadez organized by the Regional Directorate for the Promotion of Women and Child Protection (DRPF/PE) in the Sultanate of Agadez.

The thematic angle of the UN for the edition of March 8, 2023 is digitalization and the opportunities and risks it represents for women (FOR AN INCLUSIVE DIGITAL WORLD: INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY FOR GENDER EQUALITY) . With this in mind, the DRPF/PE in cooperation with the EUCAP Sahel mission organized a debate on the security risks that women and girls face online and the measures they can take to protect themselves once morest malicious actors.

Besides the fact that women – and men – are increasingly exposed to cases of online fraud, women are particularly vulnerable to being recruited by human traffickers or to being victims of cyberbullying, advances of a sexual nature (grooming) and blackmail.

The Director of the DRPF/PE, a representative of the Regional Directorate of the National Police and the President of the Association of Women Bloggers discussed the security risks and harassment that Nigerien women face online, including some number of cybercrime cases that have affected women in Agadez. After these interventions, the audience – which was mainly composed of high school girls – had the opportunity to ask questions, which gave rise to a lively debate.

The promotion of gender equality and women’s rights is at the heart of the Mission’s activities. Throughout the year, the Agadez Antenna of EUCAP Sahel puts this commitment into practice by organizing trainings for Internal Security Forces on GBV, confidence building activities between women leaders and FSI, and the development of educational materials on women’s rights and GBV.
