Gender equality extends our life expectancies
In this week marked by International Women’s Day, a global study reveals, for the first time, that gender equality is associated with a better life expectancy for women, but also for men.
Dr Ana-Catarina Pinho-Gomes, Honorary Research Fellow at the George Institute for Global Health in the UK, used data from a global index assessing the gender equality gap in different areas (education, work, voting , etc.) and applied it in 156 countries between 2010 and 2021 in order to observe whether or not gender equality was associated with a better life expectancy.
It appears that, overall, each 10% increase in this index is associated with a 4.3 month increase in life expectancy for women et 3.5 months in men.
The school for girls, the first factor favoring longevity
Of the three main dimensions observed in this study (i.e. economic equality, political representation and education received), it is the educational dimension which is most strongly associated with the extension of life expectancy in both sexes.
For Dr. Pinho-Gomes, this suggests thatinvesting in girls’ education is primordial », especially in low- and middle-income countries where “ many girls are still denied access to education and where resources are limited ».

More equality: men also gain in life expectancy
When equality between men and women increases by 10%, women benefit from 0.8 months of additional life expectancy compared to men (4.3 additional months for women once morest 3.5 months for men). Eventually, the researchers even think that ever-increasing equality might reduce the gender gap in life expectancy. Remember that in France, currently, women benefit from almost six additional years of life expectancy with an average lifespan of 85.2 years, once morest 79.3 years for men.
According to the researchers, even high-income countries, where substantial progress has been made in tackling gender inequality in recent years, would therefore benefit from further investment in gender equality, in particular to improve life expectancy. men’s lives.
In this special week for women’s rights, this is proof that the fight for greater gender equality contributes to healthier societies for all.
