The weather will present itself from its stormy side on Thursday. According to Geosphere Austria, there are gusts in many regions with peaks between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour. The west of Austria, but also the federal states of Lower Austria and Vienna, are affected, according to the forecast by the meteorologists. Strong winds are expected once more on Saturday. Geosphere issued warning level yellow for parts of Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria and Lower Austria as well as for the state of Vienna on Wednesday. Wind peaks of between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour are to be expected there on Thursday, the APA said. Especially in the morning and in the morning it might be stormy for a short time in the northern regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. “In the course of the followingnoon, the wind then decreases significantly,” says meteorologist Thomas Wostal.
Wind peaks of at least 70 kilometers per hour occur on average five to 15 times a year, depending on the region, according to Geosphere in the lowlands of northern and eastern Austria. “The last strong storm in Austria was a month ago, with peaks of up to 112 kilometers per hour at the Vienna Hohe Warte weather station and up to 142 at the Feuerkogel.
Especially on the north side of the Alps, rain but also sleet showers are to be expected during Thursday morning. For the south, on the other hand, the experts are forecasting less rain. In the followingnoon, the showers will decrease everywhere, the sun will appear more often, according to the forecast. Morning temperatures of zero to seven degrees and daily highs of twelve to 18 degrees are moving into the country, with the highest values being announced for the south-east.
Calm down on Friday
The weather is expected to calm down temporarily on Friday. But already in the evening the next rain and snow front reaches western Austria. The wind will also be stormy once more, they said. “In the night before Saturday and on Saturday itself it is once more very windy to stormy in many regions, with a focus on the north and east of Austria.”
The emergency services have already taken precautions for the storm. “We are prepared for all eventualities,” said Jürgen Figerl, from the Vienna professional fire brigade. The situation is being closely monitored. “But we are currently assuming that we can cope with the weather event with the existing team,” says Figerl.
